Horses in the Camargue Rhone Estuary France

Last September I went to the Camargue and somehow managed to get up on a horse and went out with the round up, rondissement, of these amazingly beautiful creatures in the marshes. The owners brand them and then turn them loose in the estuary marshes. Some of theme are wild, some broken in to ride. These are from a ranch which was very helpful in letting me go out at dawn and see the horses moving in their natural environment. They also left me in the middle of the marshes surrounded by the foals for an afternoon while I tried to sketch them. This ranch cares for its horses very well; the foals were completely unafraid of me and kept butting and crowding the whole time. It was a truly wonderful experience as I used to ride and even train horses but not since spinal injury. However I thought that I might still be able to ride a little and I could although most of the co ordination has gone. I told them I had not ridden for many years and this was one of the most wonderful things I have achieved for a long time.

These horses have been studied because of the way that the French are keeping a historically viable system in place both as an economic force and also helping to maintain the ecology of the region. They  look after their country very well and these paintings go to a Gallery at Aigues Mortes in the summer. This is to help raise awareness of these animals and to congratulate the various ranches persisting in their breeding and equine culture.

These paintings have used a  technique to show the flow of colour and continue to show the development of my practice as an Artist. The scenes depict memories of the Himalayas and attempt to give an experience of their vastness and Oriental nature. The model is Tamsin who lives at Marwell .These amazingly beautiful creatures are a wonder to paint and the linked Snow Leopard Trust is helping to conserve them. A donation will be made to the Trust for one of these paintings sold through my site.
